Built to Last: Reinforcing a Model T with Rust Bullet
Don Booth is from Bay City, Michigan. He restores Ford Model T cars as a hobby, both for himself and for others.
Don started restoring vintage Model Ts about 20 years ago. He is an enthusiast for Rust Bullet Automotive and will not use any other paint as the base for his cars. He swears by Rust Bullet!
The Ford Model T, introduced in 1908, was the first mass-produced car that was affordable for average Americans. Created by Henry Ford, it revolutionized transportation and manufacturing with the use of assembly line production starting in 1913, which drastically lowered costs and build time. Over 15 million units were produced before it was discontinued in 1927, making it one of the most influential cars in automotive history.
The Model T includes both metal and wood. Don uses Rust Bullet on both the wood and metal.
Don’s restoration of a 1916 Ford Model T Centerdoor sedan is a meticulous, community-supported project chronicled on the Model T Ford Club of America (MTFCA) forum. The car was acquired in October 2019 and was found to have been re-wooded previously, but with inaccuracies and poor craftsmanship. Recognizing the need for a comprehensive rebuild, Don embarked on a frame-up restoration.
The restoration process began with the disassembly of the vehicle, revealing the extent of the structural issues. The wood framing was identified as incorrect and deteriorated, necessitating a complete rebuild to restore the car to its original specifications.
In November 2019, it was determined that the vehicle was a 1915–16 Centerdoor body, which expanded the scope of the restoration project. This discovery led to a more extensive shopping list for authentic parts and materials, ensuring the restoration would be as accurate as possible.
Don expressed a commitment to approaching the project at a manageable pace, balancing the restoration work with personal commitments, such as spending time with family and planning future travels.
The restoration process has been documented with detailed photographs and updates, allowing other enthusiasts to follow the journey and learn from the challenges and successes encountered along the way. The project serves as both a personal challenge and a rewarding endeavor, with the goal of preserving a piece of automotive history for future generations to appreciate and enjoy.
He has owned some of his Model Ts for over 20 years. All have used Rust Bullet. Not one of his cars are showing any signs of rust.
