Rust is the result of the reaction
of iron objects with oxygen in the presence of water
or moisture. This oxidation process results in the formation

The process of rusting

Rust or ferric oxide
(Fe2o3) is formed by the dehydration of ferrous hydroxide.
The rusting process or corrosion occurs at a faster
rate in sea water than in fresh water because the concentration
of sodium chloride ions is much higher in sea water.
The process of rusting is inhibited by alkali solutions
while it is accelerated by acidic solutions.
