Q: 1. How do you ensure my shipment will arrive intact?
A: All Rust Bullet® shipments are packed and shipped to meet the shipping requirements specific to our products.

Q: 2. What is the best type of surface on which to paint Rust Bullet®?
A: Rust Bullet® protects iron, steel and most other metals. Rust Bullet® also provides excellent protection for concrete, wood, fiberglass, and many other surfaces. Painted surfaces should be tested on a small area for lifting or cracking. Rust Bullet® is resistant to acid splash and chemical solvents. Rust Bullet® applies directly over rusty and clean surfaces providing permanent rust protection with phenomenal adhesion.

Q: 3. How much Rust Bullet® do I need for my project?
A: Rust Bullet® covers approximately 200 square feet per gallon with a two coat application, depending on type and condition of the surface.

Q: 4. Do I need to treat or prepare the rusted surface before applying Rust Bullet®?
A: Little or NO surface preparation is necessary. The surface to be coated must be free of loose flakes of rust or paint, moisture, dirt, mildew, oily substances, wax and loose particles. The surface to be coated must be completely dry. Please refer to our Application Guidelines, http://www.rustbullet.com/Application.htm

Q: 5. Does the metal surface to be coated need to be bare or can it have paint on it?
A: Either way, just make sure loose flakes of rust or paint are scraped or wire brushed off. Rust Bullet® will penetrate some paints, but works best when it is in direct contact with a rusted surface or bare metal. To aid in the adhesion of Rust Bullet® to existing paint, we recommend roughing up the painted surface prior to the application of Rust Bullet®.

Q: 6. Can I apply Rust Bullet® on a damp or wet surface?
A: No. It is extremely important that the surface be completely dry.

Q: 7. Why should I wear gloves and protective clothing while using Rust Bullet®?
A: Rust Bullet® is formulated to have very tenacious adhesion; for this reason, it will stick permanently to whatever it touches. If it dries on your skin, it will wear away eventually but it will not simply wash off. Expect 7 to 10 days for it to wear off.

Q: 8. Do I need to stir Rust Bullet® before use?
A: Yes, Rust Bullet® should be stirred thoroughly prior to use. Avoid whipping air into Rust Bullet®. Shaking the container of Rust Bullet® prior to application may cause the formation of bubbles in the finish of the coating.

Q: 9. How thickly should I apply Rust Bullet®?
A: Our experience has shown that 6 to 7 mils dry film thickness is required for optimum performance. At least two coats of Rust Bullet® must be applied, dry film thickness of 3 mils each (0.003 inches or 0.076 millimeters). Additional coats may be needed to meet the recommended finished dry film thickness. For heavy industrial or marine use, a repeated coating of Rust Bullet® not to be less than 12 mils finished dry film thickness is recommended.

Q: 10. How long do I wait between coats?
A: Optimum drying time between coats is 2 to 4 hours, not to exceed 72 hours. It is important to rough the surface with 150 grit sand paper or scuff pad prior to the application of additional coats of Rust Bullet® if 72 hours have lapsed between coats or between the final coat of Rust Bullet® and the application of a topcoat. Please refer to our Application Guidelines, http://www.rustbullet.com/Application.htm

Q: 11. How long does Rust Bullet® take to dry?
A: Dry to the touch after 4 hours; fully cured in 72 hours. Drying time depends on ambient temperature and humidity.

Q: 12. What is the temperature range for applying Rust Bullet®?
A: Optimum temperature range to apply Rust Bullet® is 35°F (2°C) to 110°F (43°C). Never apply Rust Bullet® while raining or under threat of rain.

Q: 13. What is the temperature service range of Rust Bullet®?
A: The temperature service range of Rust Bullet® is -30°F (-34°C) to 314°F (157°C).

Q: 14. Can I paint over Rust Bullet®, and if so what sort of paint should I use?
A: Yes, but it is not necessary unless you desire a color other than metallic gray. Rust Bullet® is protection in itself from sun, water, mechanical abuse and weather; however, we have successfully painted over it with almost every type of paint and coating. It is an excellent adhesion promoter and enhances the adhesive properties of any topcoat you may wish to apply.

Q: 15. When can I apply another coating or paint on top of Rust Bullet® and should I sand the surface first?
A: You may apply another coating 24 hours after the final coat of Rust Bullet®. Rust Bullet® is an excellent adhesion promoter; unless 72 hours have lapsed since the final coat of Rust Bullet®, no sanding is necessary.

Q: 16. What do you recommend for clean up when using Rust Bullet®?
A: Wipe off fresh, uncured Rust Bullet® immediately by using acetone, xylene, toluene, or MEK. Follow solvent manufacturer's directions. Cured product is removed with sandpaper or sharp tool. Avoid getting on body, clothes, or any surface not intended to coat, as Rust Bullet® is permanent and after curing cannot be removed without abrasive action. Application equipment must be cleaned immediately after use to avoid damage.

Q: 17. Can I get Rust Bullet® in other colors?
A: No. Unlike paint producers, we are not interested in decoration; rust/corrosion protection and prevention is our only goal. However, if you wish to apply a decorative finish over the final coat of Rust Bullet®, any conventional paint will work for this purpose.

Q: 18. Will Rust Bullet® form a "chalky" surface over time?
A: No. Rust Bullet® will never form a "chalky" surface.

Q: 19. Will Rust Bullet® hold up to ultraviolet rays?
A: Yes. Rust Bullet® is formulated to block out the harmful rays of the sun.

Q: 20. How resistant is Rust Bullet® to chemicals and automotive fluids?
A: Rust Bullet® is very resistant to acids and a wide variety of chemicals.

Q: 21. Can I thin Rust Bullet® with some sort of solvent?
A: No. Do not reduce or thin Rust Bullet®. Because of the exact balance of viscosity, solvent, and active ingredients that must be maintained, Rust Bullet® must not be thinned. Thinning or adding any other product to Rust Bullet® will compromise the performance and quality of the cured product.

Q: 22. Can I pour Rust Bullet® into another container?
A: Rust Bullet® is packaged in unlined paint cans. If for any reason Rust Bullet® is transferred to another container; clean, unlined, paint cans (or similar unlined metal containers) must be used.

Q: 23. What happens if the lid sticks from coating dried in the rim of can?
A: We recommend that you shake the can vigorously for one minute, then punch a hole and pour into another clean, unlined paint can or similar unlined metal container. Shaking Rust Bullet® prior to application may cause the formation of bubbles in the finish of the coating. Wait a sufficient amount of time for bubbles to dissipate and stir thoroughly before using Rust Bullet®.

Q: 24. Does Rust Bullet® have a shelf life?
A: Yes; two years if kept in an airtight, unopened container.

Q: 25. How does Rust Bullet® compare in price to other coatings?
A: Rust Bullet® is competitively priced. Please note: Add additional costs to the total cost of other products for added steps and often extensive surface preparation. In addition to the high cost of preparation, the containment and disposal of the waste created by these extensive preparation procedures in order to comply with EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) requirements could be far greater than the initial cost of the product. None of these extensive preparation procedures are needed for Rust Bullet®, so these substantial costs do not apply. Please refer to our Product Comparison Chart, http://www.rustbullet.com/Comparison/ProdComp.htm

Q: 26. Is Rust Bullet® available in larger sizes?
A: Yes. Rust Bullet® is available in sizes appropriate for small or large projects. Please be aware that Rust Bullet® is a specialized moisture cure product that must not have its liquid contents exposed to the air for more than 2 to 3 hours. If you are using our larger containers, such as 5 gallon pails, it is critical that you pour out only the amount needed and reseal the remaining contents or use the entire contents within 2 to 3 hours.

Q: 27. What is the difference between Rust Bullet® and Rust Bullet® Automotive?
A: Rust Bullet® Automotive contains more metal than Rust Bullet® providing a smoother finish usually desired for automotive projects; however, both Rust Bullet® and Rust Bullet® Automotive contain the same anti corrosion and protective properties and will provide an outstanding defense against rust, corrosion, and other damaging elements for any and all projects that need to be protected.

Q: 28. Will Rust Bullet® protect my wrought iron railings and fixtures from damage caused by seawater salt spray?
A: Yes. Rust Bullet® is the ideal coating for protecting your wrought iron railings, gates, and fixtures from the corrosive effect of salt water. Rust Bullet® out performed the market leaders in rust/corrosion control products in the Seawater Spray (Fog) Chamber Test. This test is considered to be the toughest weathering test that a coating can undergo. For heavy industrial or marine use, a repeated coating of Rust Bullet®, not to be less than 12 mils finished dry coat thickness, is recommended. Please refer to the test results of the Seawater Spray (Fog) Chamber Test, http://www.rustbullet.com/IndTesting/NTS/ASTM_B117.htm

Q: 29. Will Rust Bullet® protect my concrete shop floor?

It not only creates a moisture barrier that seals concrete from oils, water, and chemicals such as battery acid, hydrochloric acid and the more powerful sulfuric acid, but it will actually make your concrete stronger and more wear resistant, adding years to its life. Please refer to the California Recycling Plant "Real Life" testing, http://www.rustbullet.com/CurrentUsers/Concrete/Recycle.htm

Q: 30. How should I clean my garage floor prior to applying Rust Bullet®?
A: Just rinse off the dirt and debris and let the surface dry fully.

Q: 31. Can Rust Bullet® protect my metal roof?
A: Yes. Rust Bullet® is the ideal coating for protecting your sheet metal buildings and roofs; it not only provides protection from rust and corrosion, but will actually make your metal roof stronger and more weather resistant. Rust Bullet® sprays easily and quickly with an airless spray gun. Costly replacements can be avoided by simply applying two coats of Rust Bullet®.
